So , this week sees a teacher being sacked due to an alleged incident which took place in her classroom , which saw the teacher gagging a talkative student with duct tape. http://http://7days.ae/storydetails.php?id=74068&title==
Now, I must tread very carefully here, but I am glad to say that apparently SOME people still have their heads screwed on judging by the reaction on the letters page of this 7days story.
Lets get the obvious out of the way - gagging a pupil who wont stop talking is , while sometimes the stuff of daydreams for stressed out teachers, completely out of the question. If you are worth your salt as a teacher , you will go about handling this situation in a variety of other ways. So , the teacher in question should have had alarm bells going off in her head as this bright idea flashed before her eyes!
Now onto the other relevant bit ... has the issue been addressed, or has the little boy been moved to another school , safe in the knowledge that his behaviour is acceptable? There is a fine line between sticking up for your child ( which in this case, was, of course, necessary ) and empowering your minor to act whatever way they please!
As a teacher, would I have gagged his mouth ? No, I value my job and I'm not that foolish ( or out of control )
As a parent ( which , as I am constantly reminded , I am not - so this opinion MAY be subject to change ) would I have taken action? Yes, of course.
Would I have preened my little darling for a photo shoot in 7 days ? No way , at the risk of him thinking he can get away with anything he likes - and at the very least, his new teacher will probably hate him and his family based on reputation alone !
People , people, what is next??
